TOXIC CHEMICAL EXPOSURE CLAIMS – TEXAS CITY, TEXAS
A BP refinery in Texas City may have released tens of thousands of pounds of toxic chemicals into the skies at its Texas City plant. It has been reported that this BP facility may have began releasing the toxic substances on or about April 6, 2010 - which may have lasted more than a month. It stemmed from the company's decision to keep producing and selling gasoline while it attempted repairs on a key piece of equipment, according to BP officials and Texas regulators.
BP says it failed to detect the extent of the emissions for several weeks. The company has now stated in reports that approximately 530,000 pounds of chemicals escaped from the refinery while it was replacing the equipment. These included approximately 17,000 pounds of benzene, a known carcinogen; 37,000 pounds of nitrogen oxides, which contribute to respiratory problems; and 186,000 pounds of carbon monoxide. If these figures are truly accurate – the health effects of the BP workers and its surrounding residents could be staggering.
The amount of chemicals far exceeds the limits set by Texas and other states. I am one of the attorneys who was fortunate enough to work with numerous law firms and dozens of lawyers against BP for the March 2005 explosion that killed 15 workers and massively injured hundreds. These most serious of claims need hard working attorneys on your side.
